Channel Islands

BRIEF

The Channel Islands National Park is composed of 5 islands off the coast of Southern California. Rich with beautiful flora and fauna, the park is the perfect place to take a a peek at species only found on Channel Islands. To showcase its beauty and entice visitors, I created 2 concept brochures: Version A, mimicking the official National Park brochure layout, and Version B: a modern, contemporary layout with a monochrome limitation.

CHALLENGE

How can I design 2 vastly different concept brochures for the Channel Islands National Park: 1 maintaining official layouts and guides, and another utilizing a monochrome palette and a contemporary layout?

How can I design 2 vastly different concept brochures for the Channel Islands National Park: 1 maintaining official layouts and guides, and another utilizing a monochrome palette and a contemporary layout?

SOLUTION

Version A was created with a priority in mind: design with official brochure standards as a foundation. I made use of strong focal points detailing beautiful landmarks, flora, and fauna, while keeping a structured grid for all bodies of text. Version B was a test to breakout of a traditional grid system; while I still utilized the structure, I explored an unconventional way of blocking text, image sizing, and layering.

VERSION A: PROCESS

This version focused heavily on the grid layout and system of official National Park brochures, and I started the project by studying the existing Channel Islands brochure. I took note of the use of nature illustration throughout the layout, and how it took up much more of the space than the information. I sought to find a balance between the two, while accentuating the beauty of the islands through photos of its landscape and animals.

VERSION B: PROCESS

Version B focused on a modern, contemporary layout with a monochrome palette restriction. I started this project by messing with image sizes and placement. I then opted to explore textures, layering, and unconventional text boxes. I wanted Version B to showcase a bold alternative to Version A's clean consistency.

LOGO EXPLORATION

Alongside the print designs, I designed a concept logo for the park. I first researched some of the highlights of the Channel Islands, including species and experiences that are specific to the park. I aimed to keep a simplistic approach that encompasses the islands' offerings while tying into the brochure designs with a three-color palette.
